Seenons x Schiphol: on a journey to Waste-Free Airports
Starting from January 1st, 2023, preparations started for an 8-year partnership involving tech platform Seenons, recycling company Renewi, and the Amsterdam Schiphol and Rotterdam The Hague airports (RTHA). The official commencement of this pioneering collaboration was on June 1st, 2023.
The goal? Achieving Waste-Free Airports by 2030, Fully Circular Airports by 2050
De uitdaging: Transforming Airport Waste Management
Amsterdam Schiphol and Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA) faced the formidable challenge of reimagining and revolutionizing their waste management strategies. Traditional waste disposal methods were inefficient and unsustainable, casting a shadow over the airports' environmental goals. The airports sought partners who could guide them towards a waste-free future, eliminating waste entirely by 2030 and progressing towards fully circular airports by 2050.
The solution - Collaborative Partnership and Zero Waste Roadmap
In response to this challenge, Seenons and Renewi stepped up as strategic partners in an unconventional yet transformative arrangement. Seenons, with its advanced tech platform, offers transparency throughout the waste management process, opening doors to a network of innovative logistics companies, processors, and partners. Moreover, Seenons is actively engaged in developing a zero waste roadmap, complete with initiatives aimed at reducing material usage.
Renewi plays a pivotal role within the partnership, overseeing the holistic servicing of the airports. This encompasses the transport, processing, and recycling of waste streams. The collaborative effort unfolds in phases, aligning all stakeholders on a trajectory toward waste-free airports by 2030 and fully circular airports by 2050.
Waste-to-Product Transformation
Marc den Hartog, Managing Director of Commercial Waste Netherlands at Renewi, underscores the essence of partnership in the transition to a circular economy. Renewi, a waste-to-product company, aspires to be the linchpin of this circular ecosystem. Den Hartog expresses enthusiasm for the challenge, acknowledging its scope extends far beyond merely efficient waste stream collection. Instead, it's about embarking on an ambitious journey of transformation.
For all involved parties, sustainability is the overarching principle guiding decisions pertaining to logistics, processing, and waste reduction. A concerted effort will be made to identify and establish the most sustainable processing methods for each waste stream. Seenons' platform will furnish valuable data insights to inform these decisions.
An Independent Platform for the journey to zero waste
The partnership between Seenons and Renewi is truly unique, given Seenons' status as an independent platform that typically does not engage in tendering with market players. The exception made in this instance demonstrates the shared commitment to sustainable waste management.
"Our platform is designed to facilitate sustainable waste management by connecting various stakeholders within the waste chain. Seenons focuses on reducing, reusing, and optimally recycling materials. This approach extends to the transport and processing of waste streams, leveraging."
– Joost Kamermans, CEO and co-founder of Seenons
