Case study Veritas: 90% residual waste reduction in only 7 months
Since April 2023, we have been collaborating with Belgium retail chain Veritas to optimize their waste and materials management. And with great results! In 7 months, we have achieved a 90% reduction in residual waste, and the goal for 2024 is to reduce this amount by an additional 30%. How did we do that? We are happy to tell you more about it!
In what ways are we supporting Veritas in their journey to Zero Waste?
Before starting the optimizations, we jointly began by establishing a waste policy, conducting an inventory, and identifying and completing important improvement points. Through a series of samples, we investigated what is currently in each waste bin. In which areas can we benefit from improved sorting? Are there streams that currently end up in residual waste, but can actually be collected separately? After a thorough analysis, we identified the following points to improve in their waste management:
- We expanded the number of separate waste streams from four to twelve;
- We partnered with specialized partners for advice on source separation and improving the quality of waste streams;
- We developed clear sorting instructions and strategically placed recycling points to help everyone sort waste efficiently and easily;
- We actively promote the reuse of products and materials to reduce waste production.
Effective strategies for waste reduction
After establishing the strategy, we implemented the plans. We removed various materials from residual waste, such as hard plastics, electronics, metal, EPS, silicone paper, wood, and reusable materials. For each new type of material, we then implemented the best high-quality processing option, making recycling and reuse the new standard instead of incineration.
Every material and waste stream was assigned a unique color and clear sorting instructions, contributing to efficient sorting on the shop floor. Additionally, some materials were collected separately at the store level and returned internally to ensure an efficient logistics approach. As a central point of contact, we could accurately monitor the sorting and adjust where necessary by working with local, flexible partners who provided us constructive feedback.
We replaced the large residual waste container with a smaller container that can be locked. This prevents waste from easily ending up in residual waste and simultaneously combats illegal dumping on the Veritas business premises.
Moreover, we organized intensive sorting training for Veritas staff. By increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of correct waste sorting, we encouraged everyone to actively contribute to our Zero Waste goal.
The next steps
Thanks to Veritas's high motivation and willingness to invest in sustainability, we have achieved amazing results together: a 90% reduction in residual waste! The constructive collaboration allowed us to continuously test solutions, make quick decisions, and make adjustments where necessary. And we will continue to do so! Our goal for the upcoming year is to reduce the amount of residual waste by another 30%! To achieve this goal, we have already planned three additional sorting training sessions for June 2024.
We are excited to continue this journey and will keep on innovating and improving. Together, we can make a difference! Follow us for more updates on our progress towards a zero-waste world.
